Not everyone is clear on what coaching is, or how it compares to mentoring, therapy or counselling. The following example illustrates the differences so you can find the support that’s right for you. The Expedition Metaphor: Imagine you’re on an expedition and heading into unfamiliar terrain.
Coaches
walk alongside you, believe you have the resources to navigate the terrain, and help you build the confidence to reach your destination.
Consultants
give you a plan and a map. You can call on them to recommend a path and advise you on where to turn.
Mentors
are like travelling with someone who has made a similar journey. They share their experiences, shortcuts and lessons learned.
Therapist
help you stop, open the backpack you’ve been carrying, understand why it’s heavy, decide what to let go of, and tend to the wounds that make walking harder.
Counsellors
support you if you’re anxious about the terrain ahead or struggling to keep going. They help you manage immediate distress and move safely.
